Capital Streets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to creating a better, safer, and more equitable transportation system in New York’s Capital Region. Together, we achieve this by pushing for more infrastructure and policy changes on the local, regional, and state levels, in order to create communities that are:

  • Walkable

  • Bike Friendly

  • and Transit Oriented

CS Cofounders speaking at the Launch Event

Capital Streets was forged during the Covid-19 pandemic, when our community came together seeking solutions to nuanced local issues related to the Capital Region’s streets. After a series of (remote) discussions, it became clear the real barriers to changing our transportation system aren’t engineering or even financial shortcomings, but most often political ones.

The organization was born out of a need for a more organized movement for change across the Capital Region. We are proud to be part of a network of grassroots organizations pushing for changes to our region’s transportation system and a member of the New York State Safe Streets Coalition.

Capital Streets launched in March of 2023 as a NYS recognized nonprofit and received its 501(c)(3) status in late 2023.

  • After years of working on local transportation and land use issues as an urban planner in both the public and private sectors, James founded Capital Streets alongside Kyle Hatch. Throughout his career, James has always been an advocate at heart, with a focus on improving streetscape design and access to public spaces. James prides himself in not only being someone who understands the nuances of policy and design, but also a dedicated user of active transportation modes and facilities. He became the Executive Director of Capital Streets in August of 2023 and lives in South Troy.
