Albany sees traffic crashes drop with new speed limit

Capital Streets was among the proponents of the 25-mph speed limit and is working with the Common Council to push additional traffic safety measures. The group wants the city to hire a dedicated grant writer to find state and federal funds to pay for larger safety projects, automate pedestrian signals in the city’s more walkable neighborhoods and continue to emphasize walkable environments.

‘What project?’: Community concerns with Congress/Ferry construction

“I started talking to friends and local business owners that I’ve known for a long time,” Rath said, “and saying, ‘Hey, do you know about this project? Do you know what it’s going to be for your business?’ and their response more often than not was, “What project?’”

Rath said that the businesses suggested the open letter they began collecting signatures for. By Thursday night, when the City Council approved moving forward with funding for the project, they had 85 signatures, and 12 were from business owners.

“We’re looking for, and I saw ‘we’ because we’re actually talking to community members and asking them what they want, we’re looking for something that’s balanced, that allows for snow removal, we’re looking for something that allows for emergency vehicle access,” Rath said. “And we provided some concepts to the city that would do that better than what they’ve provided.”

"We can use things like bollards. We can use things like street trees. We can reduce the risks in other ways than making it look like a fortress and making it look like somewhere that people aren't meant to be," James Rath, Executive Director of Capital Streets, says.

Capital Streets is one of nearly 80 stakeholders to back Fahy's bill which would carve out seven of the Wadsworth Lab site's acres for housing and commercial development as part of the project, saying that it wouldn't impact the timeline, or plan, for the actual building.

"When they had the public meetings, the community was very outspoken about option 1A not doing enough to protect residents to make it easier for people to get from A to B. They had two other alternatives option 1B and 1A modified that showed some different infrastructure that was more effective. Those were the options that we wanted to see. Yeah, they're much stronger options that serve the community more," James Rath, Executive Director of Capital Streets, says.
